Her story
She was made over a week in October, with the wool drying by the stove and the house smelling of quince. She came out taller than planned and slightly stooped, the kind that look like they have spent years walking roads. The acorn was already hers. It turned up in the apron pocket the same day her face was finished, and there it stayed. In the folklore around here, witches always carry something they have no intention of putting down, and nobody asks them why.
